Yiannis Kouros - The Emperor of Ultrarunning turns 53
25 years on the top
The official birthday of Yiannis Kouros is February 13th, however, his exact date of birth may be February 11th or 12th, 1956.
The year 2008 saw Yiannis’ 25th year on the top of the ultra-running world. Since his first ultra victory in September 1983, which virtually separated him by the distance of the classical marathon from the rest of the field, Yiannis has left his footprints in all five inhabited continents, breaking and setting an unbelievable number of world records.
When reminded of his long period of succes, Yiannis commented, "I realize that a quarter of a century is dedicated to Ultra-running with many sacrifices...effort, pain, happiness and disappointments (luckily a few) and many-many memories..."
Last year Yiannis won six ultra races, three of which top the 48-hour rankings. (See table below.)
Yiannis’ goals include both athletic and cultural feats. In addition to breaking his own existing world records in 200 kilometers, 24 hours, 48 hours, 6 days, and 1000 miles, as an Ambassador of Hellenism, he is also planning to complete a trans-continental run from Athens to London to return the Parthenon marbles.
More to come soon...
